Default Upload sites

If you buy some webspace and a domain and stick a script on it for uploading and some ads would it make enough to keep running. I want to do this, i just want to know if anyone else has had experience with this and did it work?

Well I have an Uploader site.

http://files.materiahub.com

When I had ads on it, it made no money at all, it would need massive traffic methinks.

How long is a piece of string?
In a sense I belive to get out you have to put in.
The more you put in, the more you should aim to get back out. The less you put in then its unlikely you'll get much back out.
In other words if you put the work into it like developing interest towards the site, by lets say advertising either for free i.e link exchanging or starting an advertising campaign. Or even buying ad space.

Letting people know your site exsists will bring in the profit and offering them somthing unique as an incentive will deffinatly bring in the $$

The demand is definitely there for upload sites, but like monkeyhead said, you've got to get the word out. That's true for just about any type of site, no matter how useful it would be to users. If they don't know it's there, they won't come!

You have to be sure that the number of viewers will click your ads so to make back the cost of the domain and web hosting - and then think about your profit. Otherwise it might not be worth it.

You must make some things to make visitors start coming just running won't work out.

I run an image hosting site, Image Addicts - Free Image & SWF Hosting and it is quickly out growing it's current host. Sadly, the profit from it will not cover a dedicated server, yet. There are changes that need to be made to the script to optimize the revenue, then perhaps :).

That is just my experience though. Of course there are success stories out there, just look at ImageShack.us... they have over 400 servers . If all about the marketing :).
