For those who don't know this, a Favicon is that little icon that you see in your address bar just before the http
It is also the icon that you see in the tab if you are using the tabs in Firefox. It is also used by a lot of feedreaders. It is a unique icon that helps identify your site. There are many ways to go about making one, however I go about this way. 1. I make a square image of atleast 48x48 in jpg or gif format. It's a lot easier this way, especially with tools like PS or Gimp 2. I use Dynamic Drive- FavIcon Generator to create the favicon. Remember to select: Merge with a 32x32 desktop icon. Merge with a 48x48 large XP icon. for best compatibility. It will allow you to save the favicon. 3. Upload it to your public_html or httpdocs, basically your website root, the same place where you put the first page of the site. 4. Put this code on your site inbetween the head tags. Code:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico" /> And check it out in your browser. Got your own favicon? Tell us about it in this post :) You can see mine for my blog

For best compatibility, try this in your <head> instead:
Code:
<link rel="icon" href="http://yourdomain.com/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" /> <link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://yourdomain.com/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />

Your welcome shavei7
@m3talc0re, I don't think you need to use the icon code etc. Have you seen any problems when it is not being used? Also using the www or not is a matter of preference. It has nothing to do with shortcut icons. I choose not to use it.

It's for browser compatibility and the icon code is for cross-OS compatibility mainly. Remember, there are a lot more browsers than IE, Firefox and Opera :P

You can create a favicon in any program, ie. fireworks, photoshop etc. Just start with a 16x16 image, design it up then save it as a bitmap. Then upload it to the root of your site and change the file name to favicon.ico.
Did you know you can have animated favicons? It works in firefox. I use one on my cpays Search Engine Optimization contest blog. - of course you have to use firefox to see it. PS. I personally hate IE so I never use it. If you don't already have fireworks I suggest you get it if you want to create animated gifs for any reason. |

From I found at icon/image in titlebar - HTML There are TWO types of "favicon"'s. 1) The one that displays in the favorites/bookmarks page ( <LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="....filename..."> ), and 2) The one that displays in the location window of the browser ( <LINK REL=ICON HREF="....filename..."> ).
