Some of you have heard me whine about the lack of Cable, DSL or satellite providers in my new neighbourhood. I signed up for Accelerated Dial Up earlier this week but can't see much difference in the speed, atleast I don't think.
Apparently, this dial up accelerator is supposed to compress files prior to my downloading them. I'm hopeful that DSL is going to be here soon (our phone company plans to have all areas of our province serviced by DSL any minute now. sigh..)as my productivity depends on it and I MISS high speed like CRAZY. Does anyone have an opinion on whether or not accelerated high speed (supposed to be 19x faster than regular dialup) exists or if it's only a bit of hype for us poor saps who are waiting with bated breath for DSL... Dana

Desktop. I'm investing in a laptop as soon as I have DSL. No point in having a shiny new racecar if you can't leave the driveway, lol.

I could never understand that ad. Do they give you a special modem? Compression or not, you can still only get 56k out of a standard modem.
They boast x19 times faster. If you do the math on 56k x 19, you get over 1Mbit. I find that hard to believe. Maybe I just don't see the whole picture. But it doesn't matter how you dice it, Dialup Sucks! :(

You've got it, StarLab.
The only thing they gave me was access to an 'accelerator' that runs in the background and so far seems to do the exact same thing my free sympatico accelerator does (aka not much). It's about $6 cheaper a month than sympatico dial up and so far doesn't seem to be doing anything different. I haven't downloaded any massive files (becuase I know better on this beast...) so maybe that's where I'd see the difference. shrug. I'm thinking of looking into Cable Cable's line of sight service (you're probably familiar with them Starlab) but would have to put a tower on my bungalow to achieve 58 feet to reach the signal across the lake in town. It's pricey to install though and if DSL is going to be here in a few months it makes sense for me to wait but if it'll be another year...I can't continue working like this.

We have an extra LAN port here if you got a few miles of network cable kicking around. ;)
And I am sure that this "other" company uses similar (if not the same) compression software as Sympatico. Ya, wait for DSL. It's not the fastest, but the next best thing to cable.

LOL, Starlab.
Maybe I'll pop by once in awhile to download some bigger files. j/k you know, two birds with one stone. I'll pick up dog food & clean out my hotmail which has over 3000 messages but I don't bother to clean it up because it takes so long for screen refreshes, lol. EDIT: and ofcourse, pay the requisite fee of an XL Double Double..

LOL...funny Starlab. It's way too late for me to think about drinking coffee usually but I have work to do here at the forums and work to do on some articles due tomorrow night so I think I'll be a tea totaller tonight.
I did see a tails 'n teeth pickup truck tonight at the Lamantia grocery store in town and I looked to see if it might be you but it was a woman driving...
