If you would not like to use the www in your website address.
e.g. I use ajaydsouza.com instead of www . ajaydsouza.com and anyone visiting www. gets redirected to the site without the www. Why would you want to do this? Search engines like Google recognize your site with the www as a different site from that without the www. (Don't believe check your pagerank on a few sites) As a result, you can be penalized for duplicate content. Read more at no-www An easy solution? You can use the code below to remove the www and create a permanent redirect to the site without the www. Put this code in your .htaccess file. Code:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.domain\.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://domain.com/$1 [R=301,L]

I had a 3 without the www and a 5 with the www. Also, some sites like SilkTide.com which give you a rating based on many factors also finds the difference.

Good advice! It's better for the Page Ranking if there's only one. Either with www or without www. Better for the visitors too! However, maybe it's because i'm all used to the url with www, i removed the no-www for my websites with another .htaccess config
