I'm pretty sure it will because of the fact that Googl and the other big search engines use the 'theme' as a factor when ranking a website.
If you talk about many things (such as Paper, Cardboard and Metal), the search engines will have trouble determining what your theme is! |

It depends on the number of keywords your targeting. For a small number lets say 5 keyword phrases you can create a very small website targeting these with a degree of success. I'd say the more keyword phrases you have the larger your site needs to be.. This is especially true with google.
If your not targeting specific phrases then its fairly easy to get massive amounts of long tail traffic, look at searchengineland.com they have done an incredible job of posting mass amounts of blog posts in a few months. Also they have already gotten a of PR7 due to the number of backlinks.. Of course the number of Search Engine Optimization Gurus over there is rather hard to take in!

I think a site 100% focused on one niche is best, even drilled down to micro-niches if possible. Considering the low costs of domains and hosting it would be easy to branch the site and network it with a new one that is related but not a similar niche.

To be honest i prefer sites 100% focused on one niche when i am a site visitor myself. I just have the feeling that they know what they are talking about. Sites with information on multiple subjects are alright for an overview, but then i stick to the niche sites.

Depends on what you want to do. If I'm looking for information about how to make my computer better I would probably want to go somewhere that's only about computers. But for other things, such as finding new music, I don't care if there are also posts about movies.
