Default how old is old?

many people i know when they hear VB6 they say "OLD SCHOOL!" true enough. but some go as far as saying "NOBODY USES THAT ANYMORE". um..actually, there are still companies who are using this...meaning, they are yet to migrate to .net. so apparently, SOMEBODY still uses vb6. my C/C++ teacher always said that C will outlast all other languages. my Java prof said it's better than C. question is, with today's never ending changes in technology where new languages emerge every other year, how old is old?

Old becomes old when you no longer find support for it.

e.g. if today VB6 programs stop running on PCs then it is outdated.

C, will not die out so easily, simply because it is easy and very widely used.

see? if that is your definition of "old" then vb6 isn't old yet. especially since VBscript and VB.net are VB. in fact, C is actually older than VB considering that C used to run on Dos.

when you cannot anymore find system for your built application to be run, or target system, then you can consider it old. But take also into consideration, on what specific application will program be run?

guess you guys answered my question. just trying to get other people's opinion on how old is old because like i said, others say VB is OLD and that nobody uses it anymore, which couldn't be farther from the truth. i mean, i know i'd want to migrate those systems to .net but it's not that easy so companies who have big applications can't just easily say "okay, let's migrate this to .net because that seems to be the trend". there are way to many things to consider.

bottom line is: i guess it all depends on a person's definition of OLD.

I would not say a person, but more like a whole community of users.

nope. i'd say a Person, not on a community of users...since a community is made up of individuals with different opinions which in turn influences his/her definition of a subject.

Agreed, but the reason why I said community was because as an individual you may decide that you are going to program in Pascal, but is it used anymore, will your users use it?

A community decides what is used and not used.

i'm talking about a user's definition of OLD. my decision on what i would consider as old does not depend on what the community decides because it is subjective. while a company, say MS, stops supporting VB for example, and a user defines OLD differently, then chances are VB is still not old for this user. take Proxy server for example. from my old job, the sup insisted i install Proxy but MS discontinued it. however, there were still some sort of support on the web from other companies. while a person on MS will say Proxy is old based on the definition that "it is discontinued", some person who still posts support on his site for Proxy (for win NT) will say it is not OLD yet because "there is still some sort of support". another person may just define old as "anything that started 2 years ago" in which case, C and other languages that are still being used and supported are considered OLD for this person. at the end of the day, it is, like i mentioned before, solely based on an individual's subjective view of the subject, and not on a community.
