SMF or phpBB

i am planning to start a forum myself..i do know somewhat abt php and isntalling php modules and boards..

i have seen both the simple mf and the phpbb...which one do you people think are much better???

i dont need vb as i cant afford to pay so much....

I have never run phpBB, so my vote would go to SMF.

MyBB its the easiest to use and is one of the best free forum softwares out there. I have tried PHPBB and SMF and MyBB was the best.

i think that phpbb is better because it has a larger community of developers and more mods and templates.

Simple Machine Forum (SMF) seems to be better than phpBB in terms of features and security. I just don't notice an active group which is into the creation of attractive SMF skins.

PHPBB is the best. You can edit the footer, header, etc. The latest versions phpbb 3 RC1 which has been recently is very good. Though i don't use any forum software as i am using drupal CMS on my site which has a integrated forum system in it.

I'ld rather go for phpBB. I must admit I'm an extreme phpBB fan, though, don't forget that phpBB is in fact the most customizable forum software out there!
If you want to be able to customize your forum, go for phpBB! Make sure you use the most up-to-date version!

Yeah. You must update phpbb regularly.

i used both,
smf is almost the same as phpbb ... its a question of taste ... take a look at the modding-sites and find templates that fit your needs.

I'd go SMF if you don't like wasting ur time installing mods successfully. PhpBB is more for advance users who like to customize the forum to their own liking.
