Usually <? and <?php doesn't make much a difference, and is usually not the cause of a parse error.

When the complex solutions don't work, resort to the ones that make you groan when you finally fix the problem. :)

It's never the cause of a parse error. This problem is an unended string or command, such as a missing one of these: ; " } etc.
