Default Why Did It Take MSN So Long To Get It's Act Together?

The new MSN, known as Live, is such a big improvement over the old MSN, with more relevant search results, less spammy sites listed and a more sofisticated algo that rewards good sites.

I just don't understand what took them so long to do this... It should have been done years ago and in my eyes too little too late!

Yes, i agree that they should have done this a long time ago but with tons of competition, it is very hard to release.

Yes but we are talking about the mother of all companies, Microsoft which has the deepest pockets and a vast number of resources. If they wanted to do something earlier they could have... just wondering what the real reason they waited?

Hmm.. I can't argue with that. They probably did not see it, but with google owning the search engine industry, they where afraid to release it with gmail or sometin. XD

You wanna know something funny? The reason they didn't change the brand is because of many users who use MSN search are from IE. As you guys know IE's homepage is MSN so with the new brand change they are actually losing more US users.

Thank you

Not sure I understand?

IE deffinately gave them their users and if that weren't the default search engine on IE they would have had none but I don't see how switching to MSN Live makes them loose anything they didn't have before... it is still the default search engine in IE.

According to Nielsen//NetRatings MSN actually lost users when it switched to Live Search. Something in marketing we call brand name recognition, which means that users identify certain brands for certain things. So when they switched the name some users thought it was something else entirely and decided it wasn't trustful enough. As you knwo anyone new user that buys a computer really doesn't know much about the internet so what they have come to understand as a way to find things from MSN may be forced to change to some other thing to find those things.

Thank You

Well they had to know that by changing the name they would have exposed themselves to this potential issue but I think they decided that the old brand, was just too tarnished and they needed to put not only a fresh face, but a fresh name as well!

I agree with both of you... first Microsoft should have done this years ago and secondly they should not have bothered to change the name just the look and behavior would have been enough!

The real reason they did it now is so that it coincides with the new Vista operating system.

Searchers are quite satisfied with their search queries results using Google or Yahoo. For MSN to stay competitive it must introducing something unique. The change of name which goes with the change in search algorithm is one way.
