There are a lot of ways to improve your search engine rank. The best I can think of is good coding practices. Make good use of header tags (h1, h2, h3) and be sure to include keywords on your pages. Example: I want graphic artists to find my website, so I often include the words "graphic" and "artists" in the paragraphs on my website. Make sure your link titles include keywords as well.

You also want to build up some quality back links. Trade links with similar websites and above all else, write good content! The internet was made for sharing information, so fill your website with some helpful information!
