This is not meant to be offensive so if it is, I am sorry. In my case, it's oddly appropriate so I thought I'd share :)
You know you grew up poor when . . . . 1. You cringe when you hear someone say "Well, we weren't poor but we were not rich either." 2. Getting approved for a pay-day loan was like winning the lottery until of course the 20th one. 3. That first credit card, typically for less than $500 was maxed out in less than a day. 4. A 1.5% service fee to cash your first paycheck was a bargain. 5. Rent to own deals were a bargain. 6. The dollar store was like being rich. 7. When the phone got cut off from time to time, you'd tell people, "It was a problem with the phone." 8. An eviction notice was an occasional change of scenery. 9. Car repair included the occasional call to the auto parts store for free advice. 10. Christmas was the only time of year for new clothes. 11. When ever you were out with friends and had no money, it was "I forgot my wallet at home." 12. The richest family in the building had a 5 year old car. 13. Car insurance was only for rich people. 14. A trip to the doctor simply meant a trip to the emergency room. 15. A cracked windshield wasn't replaced until you got a ticket. 16. Something new in the house meant a good yard sale the day before. 17. If Ed Mcmahon offered you $1MM tomorrow for $100 today, you’d have to consider it a lost cause. and of course the good stuff 18. Paying for college wasn't a issue. 19. Nothing beats the drive not to go back to that lifestyle. 20. Even the smallest things in life are appreciated because you know the other side of things. 21. You never hear yourself saying, "But what about me." |

Thanks man! It's not meant to be offensive, actually wrote it out of respect to those who lived that life and got past it. I consider myself very fortunate and I know there is a lot of people here like that. On the other token, those who live that life should also see that there are ways past that. It doesn't seem like it at the time but with enough time, hard work and dedication to doing good, the world is possible!

I can so relate to all of those. One is missing though
mayonnaise sandwiches were a delicacy. That one was so true for me growing up.

I think the worst is, that we used to love to eat bread with pig fat (it's kind of spread) and my younger brother liked it with sugar!!! (and we were happy!) ;)

I can relate to too many of those. At one point in time, I was living with my mom and we lived off of a sack of potatoes for like 2 weeks. Not a whole lot better now either though. Right now, I pretty much live off of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches because almost every bit of money I get ahold of I have to either keep in my wallet for when my son needs something like more milk or when I need to get more food for him. My son comes before me. I've been in worse, he's too young to understand. I'd starve to death before I let my son go hungry...

It really was meant to be very comical but when looking back, couldn't find many things that were pure comedy but rather tragic irony. It's ok, looking back I think, wow, times they do change.
