Should you use Pupup windows in web applications?

Most people can't stand popups, that why there are popup blockers...

Yes i have used popup windows in my web applications.
I used it for opening another page on a button click.
I am writing its code that will help you.

I wouldn't use pop ups anymore. I do not know the percentage but I know for sure that a lot of people use pop up blockers and they don't even check what it is. It was good maybe 5-6 years ago. Not anymore. (that's my opinion, look around)

I think pop ups is usefull when building intranet applications for opening windows and lookups, but in commercial web applications, it can be easily blocked by users who are not aware that they have pop up blockers. Yahoo and Googl toolbar already has a pop up blockers enabled when installed. Unlike in an organization, documentation supports the application that when accessing the web applicaitons, pop up blockers should be enabled.

I find opening external links in a new browser window (using the target="_blank" attribute) to be quite effective in not only redirecting users to other info, but in keeping your users on YOUR site in the primary window.

Also, this uses no javascript, and usually isn't blocked by pop-up blocker utilities.

I use block popup on my firefox. I unblock some sites that I trust and that I go to daily.

I would stay away from popups since most people block them and then your application might not work if a feature requires a popup.

If at all possible, do not use popup windows as they are blocked by default by most browsers. If you need to use a popup, be sure to include a link on a page for the user to click to initiate the popup, incase the automatic popup was indeed blocked
