Charging for assistance? I've never heard of that. Always the webmasters I know talk about great customer support from their hosting companies without charging them for that. Are you sure? I don't think that's part of the hosting package.

It has been done, and looks like it is happening more and more. It does take time to look at a clients specific situation, and a lot of times it's something that the user did when they had little, if any, knowledge about what they were doing. It's just like taking your site to a repair shop.

Some web host clients tend to abuse the support extended by web host providers. For a few bucks, they wanted more than the hosting service to include installing and debugging scripts. I think it is just proper for a web host provider to offer assistance for a fee provided that it will clearly delineate free services from paid services.

what hosting companie are you talking about?? such charges sound really strange. especially for addon-domains. i would not host with such a company.
