Default Is it better to work with two hosts?

So often in these internet businesses we use the phrase, "don't put all your eggs in one basket." Does this apply to hosting as well? Is it better to use more than one host at a time, so that if one goes down you can immediately throw your back-ups onto the other host and stay okay?

Or, would a back-up host not help any since a new host can be so easily acquired?

I'm hosted with two. One is my own VPS and another is a Reseller account at a host owned by someone I've known for years.

Like you said, don't keep your eggs in one basket.

But it must be a bit costly to work with two hosts, dont you guys think so. I mean if you really trust your guy you know from years and have faith in, then you may work with only one host.

I follow Ajay's example, although it's not hosted by somebody I know. I like having a backup, for if there are ever problems it doesn't bring everything to a grinding halt. You can get fancy and use one as a mirror, either automatic or manual depending on your setup to ensure 100% uptime and reduced load, also faster speeds if in different areas targeting your visitors geographically.

I like to have 2 hosts, one as a backup so if you ever have any problems at least things don't go to a complete halt. You can setup one account/server as a mirror/live backup with separate nameservers to ensure 100% uptime for your site, or as a static mirror to allow for faster speeds targeted geographically etc. I use a VPS and a reseller as well.

Cheers.

I'm considering adding a host sometime soon.. I have 10 websites hosted on one shared server.. I guess I need to move over to a dedicated account sometime soon so i can save on hosting.. plus i should get a boost in overall speed I hope.

It depends on your needs too. Your existing host may not fulfill all things that you wanted and might think of getting another host and that's what I did.

I think it must be a bit costly to work with two hosts and it depends on your needs too. You have to trust the guy, then i think its ok to work with one host.
