Hi,

Creating a google sitemap will make your position in the google search engine and a few others go up. It is quite important you make one becuase other search engines will soon be using the google sitemap protocol to crawl sites. So create one fast. Anyway when your on google, its quite hard to first understand how to create one so this post will tell you how to make one fast. Dont bother downloading googles scripts to make a sitemap, becuase you need a python compiler. You can use third party generators. There are online generators (hence the speed emphasist on this post). Pick one from the list below:

What it does is you enter in your web URL then it crawls your site, and lists all your pages (only the ones that are viewable via your navigation links) then it automatiicaly adds info to each page such as how frequent the site is updated. Then it does all that automatically and at the end you get to download its outcome which is an xml file. the xml file you get after the generator has finished must be uploaded to the very first root of your site. (e.g. www.yourdomain.com/file.xml). Once you got that uploaded you go to your google sitemap account and you add the new sitemap by giving it the url of the new xml file.

The problem with those generators is that they don't index every page on the site, the first indexes just the ones it can access from the link provided and the second one is max 500 pages. I prefer GSiteCrawler.

What are the exact uses the Google search engine has for sitemaps? Is it to to save the spiders crawling the whole site?

It shows the google sspider where each and everyone one of your pages are. By putting them on your sitemap and uploading it to google. That's why xml sitempas are more popular since you can use feeds and it can update itself.
