Code Search joins hackers' toolbelt
No sooner had Google launched its Code Search feature than folks figured out (surprise, surprise) that it's a pretty good tool for finding holes in software, too, Turns out that intrepid developers put some pretty good "tells" into their code, especially in the form of artlessly named functions and other "notes to self" planted in comments that were never meant to see the light of day. Posted by Paul Roberts on October 5, 2006 03:22 PM InfoWorld Tech Watch | InfoWorld | Code Search joins hackers' toolbelt | October 5, 2006 03:22 PM | By Paul Roberts In light of this what is your thoughts on the Google code search tool?

I was about to post this stuff but then I see this thread, actually this is a good move specially if you are directly looking for codes in your program or sample codes.
If I remember it well, there was a survey I participated in, not from google but a similar product, i'll post the url when i remember it. |

What are your thoughts about this program being abused by hackers to hack sites? Should the programmers be held responsible for leaving holes open or should Google be responsible for creating this type of search in the first place?

Also, when there's a common pre-written code, such as the freebies available to beginners, hackers may find a weakness and easily be able to find any websites with the code. I wish Google would think about this more, but it's not their job. If the hackers can get into our sites, it's our fault. |
