I would use mybb, phpbb, or SMF if I want to use a free forum software.

Same here. At first nobody has money to invest in it (i think) so it has to be free ;) and then it's phpBB... of course.

vbulletin is the best if you have the cash, If you don't SMF will be the first choice.

For free, I use phpBB. I haven't used others much, but I very much like phpBB. I haven't invested in vBulletin, because I'm happy with phpBB.
