Some said that having a portal to a forum is quite unprofessional so I removed mine and just put the sidebar for more options.

huh? Who says that? I see many forums operating inside portals. It never struck me as being "unprofessional"...

I think it depends on how you made your portal, some forums might adding some useless blocks that make it look unprofessional.

A portal actually makes it look more professional in my opinion.
Everything is more organized and you can add a lot of things to it.
