Many forum options are available, even for someone who doesn't want spend money. Besides SMF, there are other open-source options such as phpBB. What made you choose SMF? Did you have experience with SMF and choose it because you like it. Or, did you make the choice blind? In both cases, why?

I'm genuinely curious, because I have never used SMF.

Opensource and features.

as for phpBB, it's a really badly designed board. Atleast now the vulnerabilities have reduced. I remember a time it had so many security issues, that updates were released almost once a week.

Besides, I find SMF more feature intensive that phpBB.

I was looking at buying vBulletin because I was wanting to customize my forums so much and was told vBulletin was the best for that.

I ended up coming accross SMF when searching for other types of forums, after playing around with it for a while I realised it had all the features I was after and that it was also fairly easy to customize.

Have been using it for a while now and still think its great.
