I thought there was meant to be a deletion period for a domain but the domain i was interested in expired yesterday and has been registered by network solutions straight away. I don't understand if this means the original owner has re-registered (surely their name would be there) OR if network solutions have been able to jump the queue and buy the name.

If I remember correctly there is a 75 day grace period. Maybe the original owner bought through Network Solutions - they would then hold it as registrar - I think ;)
Cheers

Welcome to the world of registrars capturing your domain.
Have seen this before... a lot of registrars capture your domain, literally the moment it expires. If you haven't backordered it, chances are you won't get it. And if you left your domain to expire... well... hard luck.
