Which companies have you seen using .net?? Typically the tld that is the most sought after is always .com, probably just because it is the oldest and people are the most used to it.

I still prefer a .com site but if it's taken already and I really want the domain then I would go for .net. If both are taken, then I would just come up with another domain.

It is not free. But only legitimate educational institutions are qualified. There has been a great demand of .edu TLD from non educational institutions because of the notion that this TLD is being favored by search engines-- which to me is not true at all.

as the internet is getting more and more linked and user typed urls are reducing with all the bookmarking features every where, in future i see no difference between .com or .net, and yes who gets a good .com new domain now :(

.net is not cheaper my friend. Both .com and .net cost the same.

that is why it is good to opt for a .com name because later on you can use your site for some commercial purposes. Moreover, .com names are easy to remember and made known because people are used to .com.

.com is cheaper, sort of. There are more promo codes out there for .coms than there are for .nets. I still prefer .net to .com though.
