Default Domain question

When a domain name expires, when can you possibly acquire that domain name? Is there a grace for the concerned registrar in releasing the domain name for public use?

Once a domain name expires, there is a renewal grace period, during which the domain name may still be renewed. For .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .us, and .name, it is 40 days. For .cn, there is no renewal grace period.

For .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, and .us, there is a Redemption Grace Period (RGP) after the renewal grace period. During this 30-day RGP, domain name can be restored. Restore fee is higher than renewal fee.

After RGP, the expired domain name can not be renewed/restored.

That means then you have a total of 70 days to salvage your expired domain name. But is the renewal only possible with the registrar where that domain name was recently registered? Or can you execute a transfer even it is expired?

I thought it depended on which site you bought it through, I know that there is an expiration date, but when one of my domains expired through namecheap.com it was immediately available to the public.

Renew it through the one it expires at then you can transfer it over to another registrar.

That's something you need to take up with them. I have domains at NameCheap and they're expired but they gave me the grace period that they're required to.

Backordering is quite expensive. If you really want the domain, just go out and ask the owner. He may just be renewing it to put it on sale. Or, it can backfire :) Either way, ICANN made the grace period and it is in effect for all registrars.
