i might be old fashioned there, but i prefer .com domains myself... they are more memorable and after all - kinda donimate the domains industry. of course other extensions can be a good solution if u want to have a name that is already taken, but if u have something that u can regiter with .com or .net, why to go for .in? people can mix it with something else and u will lose traffic

You use country code TLD if you associate your site with your country. Your site traffic though is not dependent on your domain name. And you can use several domain names regardless of TLD to point to your single site.

If you plan to develop a site mainly India based you can go for it, but I would suggest if you have a .com available for your preferred domain name then go for a .com instead of .co.in or .in as most of the internet users are habituated with .com site instead of .in. However, basically it don't matter whether a .in or a .com.

I've always stuck to a .com because it is more universal. To date i haven't made a site that is India specific, hence never used the .in
