Default Registering Name Via Hosting Company

Just aquired a client who had their domain registered by an "unnamed" hosting company who are terrible.

It took over a month of bantering back and forth with these guys just to release the domain name to us. For a while, it didn't look like they were going to give it up.

Whats your opinion on this? Is it advisable to register the name elsewhere, then just change the DNS to point to the new host, or do you feel fairy safe by doing the registration through the hosting company?

The above situation has left me skeptical of letting hosting companies do this for me. Guess it depends on the hosting company...

I usually buy a domain then alter the DNS to point to my hosting server. Having the two tied up is a bit riskty in my opinion as hosting companies very rarely provide access to DNS settings.

I always recommend that my clients check out my prices against other companies. I have no problem being sensibly close with .com but the .co.uk price I buy as a reseller is dearer that 123.co.uk offer as retail!

Invariably I get a mixture of people who do the whole lot through me so they only have one point of contact. There are some who will buy the .com and hosting through me but get their .co.uk from 123 and then ask me to change the DNS on their behalf.

This gives me the chance to remind them that it is always best to keep transfers to a minimum as some companies have a fixed transfer fee plus the extra year registration with the new registrar.

Regards

David

I always advise people to register directly with a registrar. Usually a host can't offer it cheaper, because they are reselling, and plus, it works out better if you switch hosts.

I resell domains from godaddy.com, and make a tidy profit of almost a $ a go, despite selling the domains for 25c less than godaddy. I wont tell you how I do it though, but you might find out for yourself if you buy several domains from godaddy.

Got "reselling" tucked in a file marked, "To Be Considered Soon"

Being a hobbyist Web Guy, meaning I do not advertise my services (I get enough work via referrals), I am reluctant to sell, or resell in this case, anything but my time.

If I do take this to a professional level (in my plans, tis why I am here...to learn) then reselling may be part of what I do.

This to me is the ideal method. Saves time, less to bother with and the host has to deal with it all. All I had to provide for my site was the domain name, the package and the money. Easy as pie. Eating it, not making it.

I always try to get the doamin froma accredited registrar, and choose another company for hosting. I don't use resellers, always try to check the ICANN list before choosing a registrar.

Never ever register your domain with the web host... there is usually always a problem when you are trying to shift.

Do domain registrations from a registrar or a reseller.

yep, i agree! i've seen too many cases of webhost running away with the domain name when they close down all of a sudden. Good domains with PR5 were lost as a result...
