Default Mambo to Joomla

What happened to Mambo? I used to have sites customized using Mambo. Now it seems that Mambo is relegated to the background with the emergence of Joomla whose main developers are also those behind Mambo.

I admin a couple sites with Mambo, but most others are Joomla!

I have no real reason for preferring Joomla! to Mambo. It's just the way I migrated after the project split.

Both are quite good IMO.

I have not been following Mambo for quite sometime now. Does it still have an active online community and new modules to integrate in your Mambo site?

Yup, their forum is still active. Haven't been following the project too closely lately though. I usually wait a few versions then hit my clients up for an upgrade contract. :)

The shift is hassle free. They are very similar since they have common developers. Indeed there is even a step by step procedure in the migration process from Mambo to Joomla. The converse should also be feasible.

Yes, I performed a conversion from Mambo to Joomla. Simply copied and renamed the database tables I wanted to save (user, content, etc)

This was a couple versions ago, so I'm not sure if it would be that easy nowadays.

Check the new version of mambo. It is a light version for all around type of websites. I am glad to know its active community is back .

Mambo does need to advance. The new version of Joomla (1.5.1) simply rocks!

Mambo spent too much time developing the MOStlyCE editor. In my opinion the time and effort should have been spend enhancing their core functionality. The Mambo core still outputs depreciated markup where Joomla has taken steps to correct this.

Then there's the upgrade issue... I find that upgrading Mambo always results in problems where Joomla goes smooth as silk.

The new theming engine in Joomla 1.5.1 is simply amazing! You can have themes change per time of day (day and night themes) and seasonal as well. Along with many other tricks...

Although I run both Mambo and Joomla sites, my preference leans heavily toward Joomla!
