A great piece of blogging advice I chose to ignore for some time was to create a niche for your blog. I started off using my blog as a general place to share some of my verbal diarrhea but later realized that the only blogs I repeatedly visited had some kind of niche attached to them so I made my blog about being a freelance writer WAHM trying to balance it all. I have been on a bit of a blogging hiaitus but have decided to try to get back into it as I realized I've spent a fair amount of the last few months running around on a bit of a hamster wheel.

Does your blog have a niche and what is it?

as far as I understand "niche" means a specific area where you are focusing not in general aspect, i give directory as an example, General directory list all sites on all topics you can think of, while niche directory list only sites on specific category like health directory, this is a niche directory that list site only relating to health.

Techtites has a niche, while Ajay - On the Road called Life! doesn't because it being a personal blog deals on a more general scale.

TheLastLegion, yes, a niche is a specific area of expertise or focus.

If your blog does not have a niche it's like a Jack of all trades site. Although you can dwell anything under the sun, I don't think you can target specific traffic group for your site.

i think it's important to have at least some general niche for a specific subject, because too general blogs / sites often lose traffic because of n returning visitors, while targeted traffic always comes back. ideally, u should concentrate on one subject and just wait until u find ur reader and then ur audience. just my 2 cents.

Niche is quite useful if you're just starting, at least you can stand well from the competitors and be able to make it to the best.

I have two blogs, one is a general blog where I write about whatever I feel like and the other is my radio blog where I only write about music or things that effect Winthrop. It's nice to have an audience that you can target, but it's also nice to be able to write about whatever I feel like.

It is not only important to choose a niche, it is equally important to choose an unsaturated niche. If you choose the celebrity niche for a blog everyone and their mother is currently doing one of those. If you don't have a sharp wit or a different way of presenting what is to stop someone from visiting the other million celebrity blogs.

But say you are a fan of a certain not so well known celebrity, like a B movie star. Chances are you could start a blog pertaining to them and not have near the amount of competition. That is a micro niche and it is the way to go.
