Indeed! Once you get your head into it a bit, you'll see that it is quite easy to work with.
Also, being open source, if there is something you don't like, change it! Creating custom themes is a bit of a pain, but if you don't want to go down that road, there are plenty of free/paid templates out there. Have another look. You won't regret it!

We're implementing Joomla on one of our sister forums and the functionality is supposed to be awesome. I'm not sure about the technical side but I understand the results to be well worth the effort.

Just do a search for free joomla templates and that should yield some results for you.
I haven't searched for pre-made templates for a while now. Not sure what's available at the moment.

The Mambo project split a couple years ago. The core dev team for Mambo broke away and created Joomla. Not sure of the politics behind this move.
I work with both Joomla and Mambo installations. At this point, both projects retain similarity in usage. If you know how to manage one, then you know how the other works as well. This will change in upcoming versions. Theming is still pretty close, although there are a couple minor differences between the two. I have managed to keep my feet wet in both, but find my preference leaning toward joomla. (Just my preference) There seems to be more in the way of components and modules available.

Well if you don't like it, try a different one. I tried it once, and didn't like it much either. I'm currently going to try out Drupal. It seems just as efficient as Joomla, but easier to use. You really shouldn't force yourself to use it, unless you were doing something for a client.

Didn't say I didn't like it, just my preferences were leaning toward Joomla. I love both projects!
