Have you ever looked at your task manager under Processes and seen several entries for svchost.exe? Ever wonder what these processes are?
I came across this which has finally answered exactly what svchost.exe does. Quote:

Just came across this old post...
It should be noted that svchost.exe (note the lowercase) is part of the windows OS. I found out later that SVCHOST.EXE (uppercase) may be some kind of intrusion, be it viral or adware, etc, and you should take steps in correcting this. I won't go into detail, but just do a search for this and you'll find more info.
