Offcourse the best way to tune up your PC performance is to get some more RAM or upgrade your processor but if you are planning to speed up your PC without upgrading your hardware then just follow these instructions:
*First of all you should know that programs like Speed Up PC just clears up your unused RAM, thats not very effective and the difference is hardly noticeable if not used properly and at the right time. *The best way to free up your RAM permanently is to avoid using it.. so you must uninstall any unnecessary programs completly and make sure you don't have anything more than the most basic applications at your system's startup.. To edit your windows startup simply goto START MENU>RUN type MSCONFIG and enter.. There hit the StartUp tab and uncheck anything you find unnecessary, and be comfortable while doing that because unchecking stuff there won't stop using Windows from starting up.. *Now when a OS uses system resources, a big portion of that is used to run all those background services.. So jump back to RUN and type services.msc & enter! .. You'll see a ton load of background applications either running, stopped or disabled on your system.. Whenever you'll click on a service name its function will be displayed at the upper left corner so disable any services you find unimportant, remember there is no RESET TO DEFAULTS option here so you should track what you are doing so you can change them back later, thats entirely your choice anyways. Try to disable as much background services as you can. *Where your visible running applications uses your system resources, those unexpected background programs i.e. malwares use them as well.. And you can't afford to install resource eaters like Norton Internet Security to completly secure your PC as it'll serve most of the malware purposes .. so just read this article and jump back here! *Now finally, you may consider using few programs like Speed Up PC or smaller ones like RAMBooster & FREE Ram Optimizer XP e.t.c , just run them whenever you are about to play a game or when about to open some heavy application.. Thou you'll notice the most difference through instructions listed above this one. Hope that helps |

Thanks for the advice. I have a bad habit of having a bunch of programs open at once on my computer. I'm a big multi-tasker. Sadly, that backfires when my computer crashes.
