Wouldn't it make more sense to buy a $4.95 hosting account and host your own blog site?

If you have the ability and resources to put one together, sure. There's nothing wrong with using something like wordpress, though. It just simplifies the process.

Yes but most people preffer to have someone reliable and free do all of the work. For exaple blogger. THere is also strategic advantages in having a blog on other sites. As google checks certain domain names before others, bloggers for example. Since google has the overall layout already it's easier for it to index your blogger blog.

I have used free blogging services in the past and pretty well liked the results.
