I've seen some political sites and other non-profit sites ask for donations. Sometimes these sites are news-like sites, but I don't remember if any of them were blogs per se. Has anyone asked for donations on a non-commercial blog?

Yeah sure why not. It depends on what you think you'll gain out of it. IF it'll perform better than ads I'd go right ahead. Truth of the matter is I don't really like ads myself.

The freelance writing blog link I posted here a few weeks ago has a tip /donation jar. I actually plan to contribute because I got a great regular job as a result of that resource and know that although this is a good money making blog for the person, that I want to show my gratitude.
I think it's perfectly acceptable to do that.

If the site is free then yes, asking for a lower fee than actually required then... yes, paid services then no but theres nothing wrong with asking for donations even for paid sites, if they are intrested then they'll give it or they don't have to. Donations can be used as some extra money to make your services get better & better!

Great :) and I was just going to put it up on a personal site that is not designed for any type of monetization whatsoever. I actually had a dream the site would somehow become popular and people would donate me to millionaire status.

Really, it was in a dream.
