I've seen countless nothing search engines and yet many of these small directories have Page Ranking rankings of 4, 5 or even 6's and yet I have to ask how? I know the market share gives about 99% to the top 5 and yet there are countless directories with high alexa and page rankings, I've always found this interesting.

quality links that this small things are in place. meaning backlinks are always comes into play though you say that it is small.

Well the question is, how do so many no name directors achieve such high Page Ranking rankings? I mean, how many people are really linking to xyzbds something search engine?

There could be a decent number doing that. Did you check the backlinks?

Also, I've noticed that it isn't really worth submitting to too many small directories or even larger ones because the page your site is on may actually be a PR0, inspite of the homepages PR5!
