My Search Engine Optimization training has taught me that the more links on a page the less valuable the links are. So, do directories really help page rank?

Good question. I've seen Page Ranking go up while only adding directory links so I know it counts... I just don't know how much.

Depends on the page you're submitting to. If it has some Page Ranking on it, your site will see some of that PR. It's good for a backlink though which does help increase PR.

There are many reasons and ways of increasing the page ranking of a site and directory submission is one of them. It do increase page rank but that depend upon the what kind of page you are submitting.

All links share the Page Ranking, some links such as "Privacy Policy, Disclaimer, etc." use the nofollow attribute so PR won't be shared with those. Also, a lot of directories use the nofollow attribute for free listings so PR wouldn't be shared with them as well.

If nofollow isn't being used anywhere, you still gain some Page Ranking, even if there are a bunch of links on the same page as yours.

Not sure whether you pagerank will increase or not, but definitely you will see a great improvement in your ranking for the desired keywords on google for sure. You need to be choosing the anchor text you want to improve and submit accordingly!

Like mattt said you will probably rank higher for some of your keywords, and get more search engine traffic. Other than that I don't know what else.
