If there are free directories why pay to use paid directories? What advantages are thre to paid directories?

Usually paid directories are of more quality. They have inner Page Ranking, you can get a "featured" spot, etc.

Paid directories are more reliable and they have better quality then the free directories but still there are exceptions to free directories which are very good.

A lot of them don't use nofollow, which is what you're looking for.

But not all paid directories are of good quality. We should look at why they are asking for payment, whether to review our site and add it or just for Page Ranking backlinks. It would be better if it is only for the review, else paid directories are a strict no-no for me!
