Even if you are hiding your referral id's you are still spreading spam if you are advertising them in the wrong way.
I would recommend for you to hide them no matter if you were using them on your own website. There are more advantages of doing it this way.

Sometimes i hide it because want to attract some people come and join it. Some times i use clickaudit to track my referrals link. Looks how many people click and use that link. If you tell them clearly, i don't think we will called it as spam.
