You know you grew up poor when . . . .
This is not meant to be offensive so if it is, I am sorry. In my case, it's oddly appropriate so I thought I'd share :)
You know you grew up poor when . . . .
1. You cringe when you hear someone say "Well, we weren't poor but we were not rich either."
2. Getting approved for a pay-day loan was like winning the lottery until of course the 20th one.
3. That first credit card, typically for less than $500 was maxed out in less than a day.
4. A 1.5% service fee to cash your first paycheck was a bargain.
5. Rent to own deals were a bargain.
6. The dollar store was like being rich.
7. When the phone got cut off from time to time, you'd tell people, "It was a problem with the phone."
8. An eviction notice was an occasional change of scenery.
9. Car repair included the occasional call to the auto parts store for free advice.
10. Christmas was the only time of year for new clothes.
11. When ever you were out with friends and had no money, it was "I forgot my wallet at home."
12. The richest family in the building had a 5 year old car.
13. Car insurance was only for rich people.
14. A trip to the doctor simply meant a trip to the emergency room.
15. A cracked windshield wasn't replaced until you got a ticket.
16. Something new in the house meant a good yard sale the day before.
17. If Ed Mcmahon offered you $1MM tomorrow for $100 today, you’d have to consider it a lost cause.
and of course the good stuff
18. Paying for college wasn't a issue.
19. Nothing beats the drive not to go back to that lifestyle.
20. Even the smallest things in life are appreciated because you know the other side of things.
21. You never hear yourself saying, "But what about me."
